Crisis to Competency: CMSA Tackles Sickle Cell w/ WSCO

The Caribbean Medical Student Association (CMSA) partnered with the Westchester Sickle Cell Outreach (WSCO) to deliver a Sickle Cell Competency Workshop, training future physicians to better serve Caribbean and Black communities battling this inherited blood disorder.

The event zeroed in on frontline skills: spotting vaso-occlusive crises early, managing acute pain episodes, prescribing hydroxyurea effectively, and navigating genetic counseling conversations. WSCO experts led interactive case studies, breaking down real-world scenarios where cultural stigma and access barriers often delay care.

Attendees practiced protocols through role-play, emerging with actionable tools to bridge care gaps from Valhalla to the islands.

NYMC’s first Caribbean student org continues its momentum, turning cultural insight into clinical edge. Sickle cell awareness isn’t optional, it’s urgent.
